The UK's first national nature reserve, Beinn Eighe protects quartzite ridges dating back 750 million years, ancient Caledonian pine forests and remarkable wildlife between Kinlochewe and Torridon.

The Beinn Eighe massif stretches across the northwestern Highlands of Scotland, between Kinlochewe and Torridon. The UK's first national nature reserve, established in 1951, it protects white quartzite ridges, ancient Caledonian pine forests and glacial lochs. The landscape ranks among Europe's oldest: the Torridon sandstone rocks date back nearly 750 million years.

What you'll see

The white quartzite ridges dominate the landscape, recognizable by their pale colour contrasting with the dark red sandstone of the lower slopes. Below, Loch Maree borders the reserve to the north: one of Scotland's largest freshwater lochs. The ancient Scots pine forests, remnants of the Caledonian forest, harbour populations of red deer, white-tailed eagles and golden eagles.

History and context

Beinn Eighe was designated a national nature reserve in 1951, before Scotland's first national park was even created. The original goal was to protect the last fragments of Caledonian forest. Since then, NatureScot has run reforestation programmes using native pines and monitored raptor populations. The Gaelic name means roughly "mountain of the file" or "mountain of the thread,
