History of Grantown-on-Spey

Grantown-on-Spey was founded as a planned settlement on the banks of the River Spey in the Highlands. The town was established in 1766 by Sir James Grant, a Scottish Member of Parliament and the 8th Baronet of Grant Castle.

It was primarily created to rehouse tenants who had lost their homes due to the agricultural reorganization that Sir James Grant had introduced on his estates. The town takes its name from "Grant". The suffix "on-Spey" was added when the town became a burgh in 1898.

During the 19th century, Grantown-on-Spey became an unmissable tourist destination and the ideal departure point for exploring the Highlands. The town's reputation was reinforced when Queen Victoria visited in 1860. She had stayed at the Grant Arms hotel.

In 1863, two railway companies built two competing lines, both leading to Grantown-on-Spey. The construction of these lines fostered the town's development, as well as its industries (wool production, candle making, etc.). The town was also home to a brewery and a distillery. The distillery, in fact, continued operating until 1993.
